John,
I wanted to
send you a note about how much I enjoy hearing you play. You are so
versatile, and in each setting you exhibit different talents. When
the band is playing and Lu is singing with you, there is a vibrant
energy that draws the crowd in and charges up the environment. It is
fun to be sharing it all with a group of friends during this
scenario.
Then there are the times when you play acoustically solo. I
personally most enjoy this atmosphere alone, or at least without a
large group of friends. It is obvious when you are playing that you
really enjoy being with the music, not just as a gig or your job, but
as a creator. You interact delicately with the crowd ( or lack
thereof) showing sensitivity to the 'personalities' present. You
change your approach depending on the circumstances of the group you
are entertaining. You may be playing some of the same songs, but you
will change something about them each time depending on how it 'feels'
that particular time. You seem to be not only performing for others,
but also enjoying the playing for yourself. As I see your facial
expression and how you approach progressions and variations in the
music, it seems like it is also for you and your mood at that
moment...not just a repeat of a song you've played hundreds of times
over the years.
You have a gift, John. You can transform the 'flavor' in a room just
with inflections in your voice. I haven't heard you play in an
environment where you are there for background only, but it seems to
me that would be difficult for someone who seems to interact so well
with the audience. I have heard you say that such a gig is fine with
you as well. I admire your attitude, again adaptable and just
appreciative of a chance to use your creative talent. Thank you for
sharing of yourself with all who are fortunate to be wherever you are
playing and singing.
